Troy Aikman's ESPN Contract Dispute Shows NFL Broadcasting Is Changing

Troy Aikman’s $18 million-a-year ESPN contract expires after February’s Super Bowl, and speculation about what’s next has become a high-dollar soap opera. His longtime broadcast partner, Joe Buck, recently secured a six-year extension reportedly worth $108 million, while Aikman remains unsigned. The two even reportedly argued about their contracts before a recent game.
Aikman is just one of several big names caught in a shakeup of National Football League broadcast booths. CBS just replaced Tony Romo, another $18 million-a-year analyst, with J.J. Watt, for undisclosed terms. Meanwhile, questions swirl over who will take over Thursday Night Football or call Netflix’s growing slate of games beyond this season.
