“We are always one step ahead of them,” Deepti Sharma warns Pakistan ahead of Women's Asia Cup 2026 clash

The high-stake India versus Pakistan clash in the Women's Asia Cup 2026 is scheduled to take place on Saturday (September 5) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian team has already qualified for the semi-final after two commanding group-stage wins—a 94-run victory against Thailand and a 137-run win over Hong Kong. A win over the arch-rivals will ensure they finish at the top of Group A with a perfect record. On the other hand, Pakistan won their campaign opener against Thailand by 35 runs but still need to secure a place in the semi-final. Speaking to media on the eve of the game, veteran all-rounder Deepti Sharma stated that India have always been one step ahead of Pakistan in their recent encounters and would look to carry on the dominance this time around as well. "Look, there is no advantage as such. The only thing is that whatever we have won against them (Pakistan), whether it is the Asia Cup or any other matches, we are always one step ahead of them. And that's it," Deepti told reporters. "The whole team is performing well. If you look at the bowling unit or the batting unit, I think both things are balanced. The one who has a good day, she tries to do better and take the game further. And those around her, they try to stay positive things so that they step in more in their game," she added. Asked about the Pakistan team, Deepti said, "Look, our team is also good and their bowlers are also good. We know that. But we focus more on the strengths we have. And as I said, we want to play a good brand of cricket. That's what we are focusing on. "We just want to play good cricket. As a bowling unit, as a batting unit, the team should be as compact as we are playing in two games. That's the mindset." Deepti Sharma refrained from sharing details about the team combination, saying: "That's the call of the management." She was effusive in praise for left-arm spinner Shree Charani and leg-spinner Prema Rawat. "Charani is a very good talent. He is number one in the rankings. She has performed very well in the last year. The way she turns the ball, unbelievable. It's not easy to play for a batter. "It's the same with Prema. She has not played so many matches. But whenever she gets a chance to bowl, she is always one step ahead. It's like 'I have to find breakthroughs for the team'." Charani has claimed four wickets from two matches while Prema has two scalps from two games. As a senior player, Deepti has tried to help the duo as much as possible. "I have tried to help them as much as I can in the ground and in the nets, and share my experience with them. Being a senior player, I help them as much as I can." (With PTI Inputs)

Dressing Room Misconduct Rocks Pakistan Cricket, PCB Sends Players Home

Pakistan cricket has once again been hit by major changes, with the team’s leadership and support staff facing continued uncertainty. After seven players and two coaches were sent back home, former Test cricketer and senior selector Aaqib Javed could reportedly be the next high-profile figure to lose his position.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has defended the sweeping changes, insisting that the decisions were necessary for the team. At the same time, fresh details have emerged surrounding the exclusion of Mohammad Rizwan, Salman Agha and Imam-ul-Haq.

Why Were Imam, Rizwan And Salman Sent Home?

According to a PTI report, recent performances were not the sole reason behind the trio being removed from the squad. A PCB source claimed that their conduct within the dressing room also played a role in the decision.

The three players could reportedly be asked to appear before a committee and explain their behaviour during Pakistan’s tours of the West Indies and England.

Imam-ul-Haq has faced additional scrutiny after previously being accused of pretending to be injured, adding another layer to the controversy surrounding his exclusion.

Mike Hesson Wanted Changes

Interim Test coach Mike Hesson reportedly had a significant influence on the changes made to the squad. He took charge of the red-ball side midway through the England tour after Sarfaraz Ahmed was removed from the coaching setup.

Hesson reportedly wanted to give opportunities to players who had impressed him during Pakistan’s white-ball assignments. His recommendations contributed to the decision to send several established players home.

Alongside the seven players, coaches Sarfaraz Ahmed and Umar Gul were also removed from their respective roles.

The overhaul has opened the door for several newcomers, with five uncapped players reportedly included in Pakistan’s squad for the third Test against England.

Selection Committee Could See Major Changes

The shake-up could extend beyond the playing squad. Pakistan’s selection committee is also reportedly heading for a major overhaul.

Misbah-ul-Haq has already indicated his intention to step down, while Aaqib Javed could also be removed from the selection setup. Reports suggest that PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi wants to introduce a new structure, meaning further changes could follow once the England tour concludes.

A revamped selection committee could reportedly be announced after the series.

Hesson Could Take Charge Across All Formats

Another major possibility under consideration is Mike Hesson taking over as Pakistan’s head coach across all three formats.

Hesson currently works with Pakistan’s white-ball teams, but the PCB could consider expanding his responsibilities to include the Test side as well. However, such a move would depend on whether Hesson is willing to take on the demanding role of coaching Pakistan in Tests, ODIs and T20Is.

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
