Report: New Team Emerges As Suitor For Blue Jackets Kirill Marchenko

Kirill Marchenko's list of suitors keeps growing, and Vegas is the newest name attached to it. Elliotte Friedman connected the Golden Knights to the Columbus Blue Jackets winger during Friday's episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast. Friedman grouped Vegas alongside the Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, Seattle Kraken, and Winnipeg Jets as teams that have shown interest or checked in on Marchenko this offseason. Vegas Joins The Marchenko Sweepstakes Vegas has been connected to plenty of big names this offseason, including Dylan Larkin and Connor Hellebuyck, without those situations turning into anything concrete. Kirill Marchenko was asked if he wants to play hockey in Columbus. “I want to play hockey. It’s all I can say right now.” Video below. #CBJ pic.twitter.com/XRiO6Adv1e — Mark Scheig (@mark_scheig) September 18, 2026 Marchenko's fit looks different for one reason. The Golden Knights already have depth at center, but adding a proven scoring winger like Marchenko would address a need, instead of just stacking another player at a position they're already deep at. Marchenko has scored at least 20 goals in each of his first four NHL seasons, including 27 goals and 40 assists last season. Friedman's reporting made clear Vegas is one of several teams in the mix, not the frontrunner. Boston has already reportedly made an actual offer for Marchenko at some point, giving the Bruins a more concrete connection than most of the other names on the list. Elliotte Friedman: Re Kirill Marchenko suitors/Blue Jackets: Montreal; the Islanders; Toronto; Winnipeg at one point...looked into it; I heard Boston made an offer; I had some people say Vegas...other people saying they weren't sure; I have to think Seattle - 32 Thoughts (9/25) — NHL Rumour Report (@NHLRumourReport) September 25, 2026 Montreal and the Islanders have also been described as showing interest throughout the process. For now, Vegas remains one name among many, and Columbus GM Don Waddell hasn't showed any urgency to move Marchenko purely for the sake of collecting assets.

Why Ian Cole is a 'really good match' with the Blackhawks

Ian Cole helped create Landon Slaggert's earliest hockey memory. The new Blackhawks defenseman, now 37, was a 19-year-old freshman when Notre Dame made a dramatic run through the 2008 NCAA tournament to the national championship game, which they lost to Boston College. Slaggert, now 24, was a six-year-old kid at the time, scrambling around the locker room while his dad Andy, an assistant coach, did his job. To him, those Fighting Irish players were his "superheroes." Cole remembers Slaggert as an even younger kid while he was being recruited to Notre Dame, too. Now, they're Hawks teammates. "[It's] a little weird," Slaggert said Friday, smiling. "I'm kind of hitting a quarter-life crisis. But it's pretty sweet, honestly." It would probably be weirder if they hadn't seen each other plenty of times at Notre Dame events in recent years, but they have. They know each other well now. Cole, for that matter, knows many people around the hockey world well. That's inevitable for a personable guy who just joined his 10th different franchise in his 17th NHL season. He and Frank Nazar share the same agent, Kevin Magnuson. He and Teuvo Teravainen played together on the Hurricanes in 2021-22. The next season, he was coached by then-Lightning assistant coach Jeff Blashill in Tampa. Those "known quantities" gave Cole comfort when he decided to sign a one-year, $4 million contract with the Hawks on July 1. "I'm a big fan of how [Blashill] handles the team and the spotlight and how he runs things," Cole said. "He does a really great job." He has enjoyed familiarizing himself with rest of the young Hawks, including defenseman Sam Rinzel, who was four years old when Cole went to college yet has skated as his regular partner throughout training camp. Their collective "youthful exuberance" has been refreshing, putting aside the fact they never understand his movie references. "The guys are young, yes, but everyone wants to get better...and everyone wants to be a playoff team," Cole said. "I think everyone here believes that we can do that." Cole's teams have made the playoffs in 12 of his first 16 seasons, including Stanley Cup wins with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017, so he has plenty of relevant firsthand experience to share. That hasn't happened much yet inside the locker room, but he expects it will as the season progresses. One occasion that will likely prompt a discussion: Cole will hit the 1,000-game milestone after just 10 games with the Hawks, possibly (barring injury) as soon as Oct. 23. His most recent playoff berth came last season with the Mammoth — a young-in-their-own-right team that the Hawks actually swept in their four-game season series, giving Cole a glimpse of the Hawks' potential before he joined them. "Last year, I think they had the ability to beat anyone on any given day and also potentially lose to anyone on any given day," he said. "My read of the situation...is if we can clean up some of those things that caused us to lose games, we'll put ourselves in a very good position to continue to climb those standings." Cole essentially replaces Connor Murphy as the elder statesman of the Hawks' defense and a staple of their penalty kill. Slaggert, who obviously knows Murphy well, agreed their "calming presence" is similar. "Ian does a really good job of managing risk-reward," Blashill said. "[He] knows when there’s a play to be made and when there’s not. [He] doesn’t try to make something up that’s not there. [He] really understands what he’s good at and does that. "He’s got a maturity to his game. And if there’s an area that all young players have to improve at, that would be the maturity of their game. ... It makes [him] a really good match for our group."

Calgary Flames sign Alex Nylander to one-year contract

Alex Nylander knows how to impress a front office. After joining the Calgary Flames on a professional tryout agreement before the start of camp, Nylander has now inked a one-year deal, worth $850,000. Homecoming 🙌 We've signed Alex Nylander to a one-year, two-way contract with an AAV of $850,000! pic.twitter.com/6XGmMSXGyp — Calgary Flames (@NHLFlames) September 25, 2026 The deal is a two-way contract, and it's going to be tough for Nylander to carve himself out a permanent role on the big club, however, he's shown enough skill throughout training camp to stick around. Nylander, 28, recently recorded one assist in Calgary's 4-3 shootout win over the Seattle Kraken Thursday night. Nylander is the younger brother of Toronto Maple Leafs' William Nylander, and the son of former NHLer Michael Nylander. He was originally selected with the eighth overall pick of the 2016 NHL Draft, by the Buffalo Sabres. With this contract being a two-way deal, when Nylander is playing AHL games, he'll earn $250,000 AAV. A very far minimum guarantee from the Flames front office. What many folks don't realize is that Nylander, and his brother Willy, were both born in Calgary, so yes, it is a homecoming of sorts. They were however raised in Sweden, but their Dad had his two boys while a member of the Flames. Nylander has appeared in 126 NHL games over his career, including spending time with the Sabres, Blackhawks, Penguins, Blue Jackets, and Maple Leafs, Nylander has scored 25 goals and 49 points. He’s also posted 141 goals and 307 points in 459 career AHL contests.

How the news of ForBets works

Where the stories come from, how your feed is made and how to get an alert, with the terms of the news pages.

The stories are collected from the news sources of the sports we cover, and each one says where it comes from. For some of them only the opening and a link to the original are shown: the full text is read on the site of the publisher, who owns it.

News has three tabs. Your feed shows the stories of the sports you follow, Discover shows every sport, and Saved holds the stories you kept to read later. You can search by headline or topic, narrow the list to one sport, and mark everything as read.

Yes. In your account, under Sports & alerts, choose the sports you follow and how you want to hear about each one: in the app, by push or by email. The bell in the header collects the new stories of your sports and the new picks of the analysts you follow.

News is for reading and does not recommend bets. For picks, open the list of matches and compare the analysts by their records. The two are kept apart on purpose: a story is a report, and a pick is an opinion that its author answers for.
